Delhi is the 'metro'...
Delhi has fallen in love...with the 'metro', it is beginning to identify itself with the metro. Dilli ki shaan hai Metro. Hamare paas Metro hai, tumhare paas kya hai, is the usual refrain of Delhiites when talking with the lesser mortals from other cities.
I love travelling in the Metro. I catch up on my reading, where else do I find the time???!!! Despite the nudges (!!!???) from my fellow commuters - light or hard, the very loud phone conversations (I know the life history, work place problems, sibling fights or boyfriend troubles, Mother-in-Law troubles, Dinner menus of a lot of unknowns).
DMRC must have thought they were helping Delhities lose fat by restricting eating in the Metros. But, we are Dilliwallahs, you cannot keep us away from our food for THAT long!!!
My smelling powers have sharpened with regular practice in the metro. Myriad smells - food, sweat (the FMCGs really need to be more pointed in their messaging!!), children, clothes, perfumes.....list goes on. I have learnt to distinguish each one out of so many.
But, all said and done, I love travelling in the Metro. On time, efficient, clean, with efficient disaster management, polite staff (surprise, surprise...Delhi can be polite), regular announcements, proper directions etc etc, make each journey a pleasant experience. Despite the crowds, I reach my destination on time and that is what matters. I am saved from consumption of deadly fumes on the roads, crazy weather conditions, and escape the unending traffic snarls. I don't have to drive in that chaos!!!!!
And, one very important aspect of the travel in the Metro, which every woman will identify with. The Delhi Romeos actually behave themselves in the Metro. The percentage of men troubling / groping a woman in the Metro must be a fraction of what it is outside. While in the Metro, we are safer, much safer. Maybe, Delhi needs to do away with its roads completely......Think about it.
